There was a time in my life when, "Tres Amigos," meant a shot of Jim, Jack, and Jose doing a Mexican Hat Dance on my liver. It still means that, but now it has also taken on a whole new meaning. I found that meaning on my last lakeside visit to Li Gong Di.
There's a new hombre in town when it comes to Mexican food in Suzhou. It's Tres Amigos, and it's conveniently located next to the Li Gong Di bar district. I don't know what it is that makes Mexican food so enticing when you're drunk. It's one of those truths that everyone knows and no one questions, like gravity. Things fall. Tacos taste good. The sun rises and sets. Amen.
Walking in, the first thing you see is the bar. It's fully loaded and I immediately grabbed a cold Tiger. So far, so good. A friendly waitress led me to a comfortable booth, right next to the pool table. Yeah, there's a pool table in the middle of the dining room. For those who have never played Burrito Nine Ball, here's one of your few opportunities. Opening the menu, there is a wide variety of standard Mexican fare, and other classic Western food like Chicken Cordon Bleu and a variety of steak, chicken, and seafood dishes.
I kicked it all off with an appetizer, the Jalapeno Poppers. These surprised me, as they were actually homemade and hand breaded. Huge Jalapeno peppers stuffed with cheese, dipped in batter, and deep fried. Served with a creamy, rich, dipping sauce, these really hit the spot. For my main course, I decided on the always dependable beef enchiladas. Two corn tortillas filled with spicy ground beef and smothered in tangy sauce and cheese, served with some really authentic beans and rice; it’s basically, satisfaction on a plate.
If you like Mexican food and you're looking to try something new, go check out Tres Amigos. Entrees range from around 50RMB to over 100RMB. Parking is available, and everyone is sure to find something that they'll like. Even you, amigo.
