On Xindai Avenue in the heart of the SIP is, Paulaner, a well-known restaurant and bar of the German persuasion.
Therefore, I deduced that they would have good beer and good sausage. I was pleasantly surprised to also find a live band really getting into a cover of "Smooth Operator". They weren't German, but I guess you can't have everything.
If you're one of the more frugal among us, Paulaner probably isn’t the place to pinch pennies. Fortunately, the food is good enough to make it worth your while. The Paulaner draft beer is great, and if you catch them at the right times, prices are downright reasonable. Show up from 1:30pm to 4:00pm and catch their afternoon tea for only 38RMB. It includes calamari, homemade sandwiches, a wide selection of refillable drinks, and more. Also, for those of you who are teachers, stop by on September 10th for half price on your meal.
After a long look at the menu, we started off with their Pork Neck. It's cooked with beer and really tastes like it, which is a good thing. A large portion is served up with potatoes and some vegetables and it will fill you up quickly. Next we had their version of Fish and Chips, which were also served as a large portion and did not disappoint. Unfortunately we were too full from the Pork Neck to finish it. I'm sure there's a moral here, but I don't really give enough of a damn to find it.
