There are just so many things that we like about Guting Cantonese Restaurant that we just don't know where to begin. Should it be with the architecture or the dim sum or the dishes? So hard to choose. Since we must, let's begin with what makes it unique amongst the mass of buildings on East Ganjiang Road. This is an old family mansion and the only place on that stretch of road still preserving traditional architecture, so it's hard to miss. The peaceful courtyard – replete with fountain, cabana, obligatory rock sculpture and foot bridge – welcomes visitors and shields them from the noisy traffic just outside. Nighttime is definitely a spectacle with lights nicely strung up to accent the curvature of the structures.
Now onto the food. Those of you out there who are dim sum junkies like us probably already know about Guting. Those of you who aren't yet will be after trying theirs. We did brunch there one Sunday and loaded up the table with everything from Congee (excellent!) to Shrimp Dumplings (another must). The cha shao bao (buns stuffed with sweet and sour pork) was out of this world. Actually, everything was fabulous. Just make sure to go with a group so you can sample as many things as possible.
The second time we went (we just couldn't stay away) we decided to keep the dim sum menu closed and move over to the dishes. If you have a sweet tooth, you've gotta get the Candied Walnuts – definitely something our mothers would have made us save for dessert, but being the naughty children we are, we lead off with it. Our favorite dish of the night was the Crispy Vegetables. It was a little like a thick vegetable pancake, but we couldn't quite figure out what all was in it. Still, it was crispy on the outside with a creamy and crunchy inside. No Cantonese meal is complete without some sort of crispy meat, and we opted for the chicken, which rounded off our dinner nicely. Now, we must warn you, this kind of quality isn't going to be cheap. For a dinner with five dishes and beers, we dropped close to four hundred. But sometimes you need to treat yourself. English and picture menu available.
