Hot pot almost always goes down well, but we all know that it can be a little intimidating for some of us. Ordering can be hard, the good places are always crowded and noisy, and not all of us can handle the spice. However, this is the perfect place for hot pot newbies and old hands alike. First of all, the menu is trilingual: Chinese, English and Japanese. Most of it also has pictures. And, the convenient checklist for ordering makes it easy keep track of what you’re getting, meaning you don’t have to be bothered by waitresses looming over your table while you pour over hundreds of choices.

Another plus to 789, you can choose from almost a dozen standard hot pots and then head of to the spice bar and add exactly what you want – sesame paste, garlic, chilies, even hemp paste. There are dozens and dozens of choices. It gets even better because each person at the table gets their own mini pot, so everybody gets it there own way.

This place is always crowded, and you will definitely need a reservation on the weekend, but that’s how you know that a place is good. Despite the crowds, it still feels very spacious; there are high ceilings and lots of glass and windows. Also, there are none of those annoying propane tanks under the table. Now, even though this place is super modern and is ultra trendy (drawing some of Suzhou’s wealthier residents), it barely costs a dime. We only dropped 110 kuai but wound up with enough food to feed five. There are pricier items if you want them, but it’s not necessary unless you want to impress your friends with some of their very fine spirits or a little authentic Kobe Beef. English menu available.
