I didn't begin to appreciate sushi until I was well above voting age, but I have more than made up for it since. I don't know what it is, but there's something about boneless, chilled, raw fish that fulfills some sort of primal urge in me. The trouble is, eating sushi in Suzhou is all too often inconvenient or expensive. That's not the case anymore.
Sushi Express, one of Suzhou's best kept secrets, smashes the sushi barrier. Located in the basement of the monstrous In City shopping mall, this place is often overlooked. It has the amazing combination of fresh, delicious, sushi, and amazingly fast service; all at 6RMB per plate. Tuna? 6RMB. Salmon? 6RMB. California Rolls? 6RMB. Even cold beer and hot Japanese sake are, you guessed it: 6RMB. Grab what you want off of the conveyor that snakes its way around the tables or request what you want from the menu and the practiced sushi chef will make it for you while you watch. My plate of salmon was sliced up and delivered in about 30 seconds, followed by California Rolls, tuna, cucumber rolls, potato salad, and eel hand rolls. My personal favorite is the hand roll, which is a large cone of seaweed, stuffed with cabbage and your choice of shrimp or eel. Extra wasabi for me, please.
If you've been to In City before, you know how accessible it is. There's a huge parking garage, it's near 2 bus stops, and taxis are plentiful. If you're looking for a quick lunch without a wait or looking for some good sushi to kill that raw fish craving, Sushi Express delivers.
