What you are about to read should likely prod you to make a reservation at Tairyo Teppanyaki, so we feel obliged to warn you right from the start: good luck, be patient, and be forewarned. There is no guarantee that you will get a reservation for a party of five on a Friday or Saturday by calling ahead the day before. Even during the weekdays from 6pm to 8pm walk-ins for a group that size often have to wait which is embarrassing as they have no convenient place fordoing so. Many of the restaurants and particularly the nightclubs on Ligongdi are still finding there footing but Tairyo has already cemented its reputation as the king of the jungle.
For 150RMB you can eat and drink anything on the menu, really anything, including the menu. Tairyo doesn’t have a separate price for the drinkers and teetotalers and unlike some places on Shiquan Street, you know who we are talking about, they don’t mess with you by purposely forgetting dishes, recommending the cheapest vegetables on the menu, or flat out telling you that you only have 20 more minutes to order even though you only sat down an hour ago. In fact, our waitresses were incredibly friendly and recommended that we should order more. Our waitress also told us that the Sushi would be a little slow in coming and told us that we, “might as well just order more Sashimi because who wants to fill up on rice?” Ten dishes each isn’t enough? Definitely not, our waitress advised, “You should get more steak and maybe some mushrooms.”
Apart from the food, the best thing about Tairyo is the people. We are positive that apart from us the clientele includes some of the most attractive people in the city. They make us look bad. During the summertime, Tairyo recommends cold sake especially since the flames from the table occasionally lick the ceiling. It’s been a hot summer so do your chef a favor and make him ganbei a few cups or glasses of whatever it is you’re drinking as long as it’s cold. After all, it won’t cost you anything more.
