The Southern Cross group has been around for a long time, and they’ve made it their personal mission to bring various cuisines from around the world to the hungry people of Suzhou. They’re at it again on Shiquan street. The Southern Cross Teppanyaki joint just opened in the building that used to house the old Indian at the Cross (also theirs). Here, you can go the à la carte route, but that’s for suckers. This place is an all-you-can-eat affair for 128RMB or 158RMB, which gratefully includes all the beer and saki you can consume as well. Finally, if you’re on Shiquan street and you’ve got a mind to melt your face with alcohol, you don’t have to limit yourselves to the bars.

In addition to the teppanyaki, they also serve sushi and sashimi, and it’s served fast and fresh. Now, at any buffet you want to make sure that you get your money’s worth. We find that the trick to doing this is to eat as fast as humanly possible. Order a good amount of dishes, and wait until they all come before you dig in. If you eat slowly, you’re gonna find that your not as hungry as you thought you were. Like at most teppanyaki joints, you’ll likely be sitting at the hot plate with strangers, but don’t worry about them noticing what a slob you and your friends are. They’ll be too busy watching the chef do his thing to notice the wasabi smeared all over your face.

SC Teppanyaki is being run by James, the former manager of Q’s Club. He has put together an extensive menu of the best that Japan has to offer and made sure that the chefs know what they’re doing. Even if they didn’t, we’d still go because there is nothing better to stave off the cold this time of year than piping hot saki. Everything here is good, but we highly recommend trying the Fried Banana and Ice Cream for dessert. We don’t know how they keep it from melting, especially after they’ve covered it in rum and seared off your eyebrows in the ensuing flames, but it was damn good.
