We’ve all wanted to escape the city and go somewhere and be pampered. Dragonfly will do you right, and you don’t even have to leave the city. The Dragonfly is well known in Shanghai as being hands down the best spa in town, and the South China Morning Post ranked them among the top ten spas in China. They definitely get high marks in Suzhou. There is a full range of Chinese, Shiatsu and specialized massages designed to cure whatever disagreement you have. It doesn’t matter if it’s jetlag or a hangover. Half hour massages start at just 65RMB, but you won’t want to stop there.
After running through the full list of services and making your choice (we opted for the opulent Crystal House), you’ll be led to a dim, lavender scented room to wait and consider how much better you’re going to soon feel. By now cell phones are off, smoking is prohibited, and the staff is quiet. But the experience is just getting started. Stone walls and floors are adorned with incredibly elegant decorations gathered from China and Japan. Soft music lingers, candles light the passageways and rooms, and the smell of aromatic oils fills the air. You’re instructed to secure your belongings, change into baggy pajamas, and then ring a bell to summon your masseuse.
The private Crystal House is as elegant a room as any we’ve ever seen. The room accommodates two people, so you can bring your better half and unwind together. From the moment the massage began, it was clear that the staff is better trained than any we had ever encountered. A most peaceful hour and a half had just passed too quickly, but we still had a foot massage ahead of us. That meant rolling onto our backs and quickly falling asleep. We just couldn’t help it. Crystal House has a private shower equipped with everything you need, including soaps, razors and toothbrushes. You’re guaranteed to look better going out than you did coming in.
The staff at Dragonfly is fully qualified to supply a range of dermatological services and products. The management and some of the staff speak good English and go to great lengths to address any concerns that you have. Reservations for VIP services are sometimes needed, but they are easily made over the phone.
