Looking for a workout? Do you lack discipline? Are you tired of being shoved by old women in the supermarket who think you are cutting into the egg line? The answer to all of your problems is here- Synergy Suzhou Combat Club, the Brazilian Jiujitsu and Mixed Martial Arts Club in Suzhou. An affiliate of Synergy Jiujitsu in Indonesia, it's the first club of its kind here in town. Never heard of Brazilian Jiujitsu? It's like regular Jiujitsu, only more Brazilian. It's a big thing and there are two Brazilian Jiujitsu tournaments in Shanghai this year.
I recently headed down to the Rainbow Shopping Center in SIP to check out one of Synergy's classes. With a friendly guy by the name of Kenneth playing the role of Mr. Miyagi, I watched a group of mainly expats engage in an intense, purposeful workout, followed by instruction and practice of martial arts technique. Very impressive, and the best part is, it's practical for a few reasons. It teaches you to defend yourself, gets you in shape, builds character, and self-esteem, and makes it really easy to intimidate old women who may have wronged you in the past. Yeah, I know. I saved the best for last.
If you're interested, you have nothing to lose. You can find their training space in the Ai-Mei Yoga and Dance Studio on the eighth floor of the west side of Rainbow department store on Suxiu Road in SIP, but call first to find out when their next training session is. They have a free trial, so anyone who is interested in checking them out can see if they like it without losing an arm and a leg (not the metaphorical ones, anyway). Anyone who decides they like it can pay anywhere from 220 to 450RMB per month depending on what they're looking for, which seems very reasonable to me for this level of personal training.
