I've never had a health club membership in China before, so it was mostly curiosity that led me to the iCLUB gym on Jinji Hu Avenue. To be completely honest, I didn't expect much from a gym in Suzhou. I figured it would be relatively behind-the-times compared to its Western counterparts. What I discovered, however, was something completely different.
It's upscale to say the least. Opened in September of 2008 in the SISPARK in SIP, iClub boasts 4500 square meters of some of the most up-to-date equipment in Suzhou, with a full line of Italian TechnoGym equipment, a swimming pool, a sauna, and just about everything under the sun, iCLUB also provides its female members with iSPA, a relaxing beauty treatment designed to improve your skin and eliminate stress without taking up a lot of your time. iCLUB has more to offer than most gyms I've seen in other countries. The staff was extremely friendly, and there was a very happy vibe throughout the place. Want to exercise your arms while watching a motorcycle race in your choice of languages? They have a machine for that. Tired from your regimen? Take a breather at the juice bar, then hit up the fencing room to test your skills at swordplay. Or see if you can float face down in the pool so long that someone assumes you've drowned and jumps in after you. Actually, maybe that's not such a good idea.
More than just a place to work out, iCLUB also caters to a common desire to socialize with other foreigners. They offer special trips and activities as well as contests and prizes to those interested. They seem to concentrate on relaxation and enjoyment as a supplement to exercise and physical health, which certainly makes sense for someone trying to develop long-term, healthy habits.
Will it make me get off my ass to finally join a gym? Maybe.Don't judge me.
