Well Dental Clinic |
|
More than likely, if you are a foreigner living in Suzhou you are overdue for a trip to the dentist. I, myself, was also guilty of that offense until recently. Having spent more than a couple of years in avoidance of dentistry, I succumbed to the desire to keep my teeth in my head and accepted the inevitable.
Having no idea which dentist to choose in Suzhou, I asked a friend and ended up at the Well Dental Clinic. On the short 10 to 15 minute drive from the SIP, I had no idea what to expect. Would they find a problem? Would they have to drill? Cavities, gingivitis, root canal? Would they speak English? Do they have adequate pain medication? Will they lock me in a small room and feed me salami under the door to keep me alive for a prolonged period of time? There was really no way to be sure.
When I arrived at Well Dental, I entered the front office which was...

Paulaner |
On Xindai Avenue in the heart of the SIP is, Paulaner, a well-known restaurant and bar of the German persuasion.
Therefore, I deduced that they would have good beer and good sausage. I was pleasantly surprised to also find a live band really getting into a cover of "Smooth Operator". They weren't German, but I guess you can't have everything.
If you're one of the more frugal among us, Paulaner probably isn’t the place to pinch pennies. Fortunately, the food is good enough to make it worth your while. The Paulaner draft beer is great, and if you catch them at the right times, prices are downright reasonable. Show up from 1:30pm to 4:00pm and catch their afternoon tea for only 38RMB. It includes calamari, homemade sandwiches, a wide selection of refillable drinks, and more. Also, for those of you who are teachers, stop by on September 10th for half price on your meal....

Hot Spot
The Serendipity Inn |
|
Whiling away in this heat, it’s oppressive to say the least. Fit for neither man nor beast, and as someone who’s been accused of being a less than flattering example of both, I feel that makes me more than qualified to speak on behalf of both parties in regards to this wretched weather. How fatigued I feel at the very thought of so much as even the slightest flight of fancy, when even the most trifling of pursuits puts me at risk of perspiring through the thinnest of my fine linen suits. No, I’m afraid high society offers me no respite from the relentless swelter of summer, so when one of my associates down at the International Trade Mart, which I founded, clued me in to a new resort nestled in the verdant hills of Horse Mountain (马山) called the Serendipity Inn (风和日丽1号), I took it as a sign.
I immediately called upon my man servant, Smedley, to pack our bags and ready the car. His real name is Frankie Jenkins, but I couldn’t think of anything more uncouth than turning towards the kitchen during a formal dinner, and yelling, “Oh, Frankie!” Oh, we have fun, the two of us...

On this Harvest Moon: The Mid-Autumn Festival
by Clay Shaw |
Being a foreigner in China is all about getting noticed, right? If you aren't busy dodging the stares of elderly citizens playing cards on the sidewalks, then you're at least remotely conscious of nervous whispering and finger-pointing behind your back, as children hide behind their mothers, and men cast furtive glances at the freaky... |
This year the Mid-Autumn Festival, or Moon Festival, falls on September 22nd. This is the 2nd most important festival in China, after the Chinese New Year/Spring Festival blow out extravaganza. The Mid-Autumn Festival is a harvest festival that coincides with the autumnal... |
